Detailed profile of my target audience

Detailed profile of my target audience

Age

My target audience will be quite wide. The age will range from teenagers to adults, since this kind of music is more for people who are growing up and dealing with personal issues , who want to zone out or feel like someone understands or have a strong mental revelation to their own life experiences. This music will be aged from (14-50), the rapper(Style of music) I have created is related character towards the 'image' and the rap conventions which i'm trying to portray. Eminem is a strong example.

Gender profile

The gender for this style of music can be both men and woman, however this style of music may intrigue men more than woman ;this  music mainly relates more to people with a masculine sense, however, woman who has a similar sense could also have a strong interest.

Hobbies / interests

Some of the interest of the target audience in this particular kind of rap music are the lyrics, lyrics and rhythm,a sound track that has a good beat and has a solid structure, if the song has no purpose, that is not trying to inform or send out a message that influences the audience's interest, then it won't be worth listening to. Also some of the hobbies for these target audiences are natural hobbies that range from sports that help motivate them to do things like a regular job in the office.

Income and status (A, B, C1, C2, D, E)

The income status or demographic for my target audience would range from B to E (this includes B/ C1, C2, D, E). This is only because the magazine isn't aimed at the rich or a specific demographic in general, it is aimed at the community; the public living nationally in the UK so the demographic is ranged from working class people to students and young teenagers. This strong differentiation is important to the over all broad target audience.

In relation, Eminem would be an A, a world famous rapper known by billions of people in the world. This relates to the front cover and the audience of the magazine because Eminem seems to be a rapper who has experienced all sorts of these incomes, coming from a teenage college student  that has had troubles with drug abuse and alcohol to making something special of himself, His music portrays himself as a example of a struggled life which has highly achieved from a stats E/D to a status A/B and that impact the hope of many people who are suffering with these issues.

Appearance

The appearance of my magazine with Turn up's name at the top of the page and his body (medium shot) covering mainly the central image and some of its surrounding with puns and detailed features explaining where and what certain pieces of information are going to be on and what page its going to be on. Many of the rappers in competition or correlated towards his success will be at the bottom of the page including some rivalry and the tours. This is done to show dominance in the brand image.

What clothes they wear

The kind of clothes that will be shown in my music magazine will be with natural and plain white tops with designer shirts and earrings , the kind of superior development fashion sense  in the late 90's going into the next century with ageing 'swag'. Also, normal clothing such as jeans and regular tops will be worn. Stylish and fashionable tops common in the modernized society.

What music they typically listen to

Generally, they listen to music such as rock or music with rhythmical lyrics, music that helps you zone out (RNB, HIP-HOP etc).

KEY CONCEPTS

How did your research influence your target audience?

One way in which my research influenced my target audience is through the research in magazines such as Kerrang and VIBE. For example, Kerrang magazine doesn't specify a target audience, however has been involved in musical tours and has a history of creating magazines of rock music or 'hard rock'.

How did your research influence your ideology?

One way in which my research influenced my ideology is through the tour conventions which is a big part of my magazine. Bringing together social groups and creating a sea of target audiences with similar interest was a important aspect of my magazine production.

Magazine Analysis: Case study

Front cover analysis( Kerrang, OCT 11,2014)

1) Colour in magazine

How many colours are used? Is it calming or more exciting?

The image overlaps the colors showing that the image is dominant, The colour is split in to two, with black on one half and red on the other half. The colour red represents anger or excitement whilst black represents selfishness and darkness.  There is also a difference in colour between yellow and a masthead in purple.  The white colour design in big capital letters shows that the white colour gives out the key information because of the size of the font. The mast head in black with a 'VS' showing the separation in the rhetorical question shows the difference in competition engaging the reader straight away.

Are colours used to emphasis particular information? If so what colour is used and what information is emphasized, how does this attract the audience?

One colour used to emphasis particular information is the colour used in the title. The white colour obviously illustrates, especially in a big white font, that most important piece of information are in white which of course is the title. The different types of colours also tells us that different colours represent different pieces of important information. For example, ''THROUGH THE KEYHOLE'' With a pun in there, tells the reader that this is key to the magazine, also giving out the idea that it its vital to the magazine's message relates to the what the title is saying.

Analysis of the colour that is based in the magazine

What are the main colours used throughout the magazine ( not including images ) ? What are the connotations of these colours? How will they attract the audience?

Through out the magazine, mostly the same kind of colours are used around the perimeter of the image or at the bottom, consisting of the primary colours or plain white. Also a blend of light blue and purple is used in the magazine as well, including black and yellow contrasting in with the text. The text in the central part of the page is split up. The colours in this context connotate different things. For example, the sub heading is yellow and the text in the master head is purple, whilst the text is in all black or white, a mixture of both black, white and purple are portrayed through out the magazine.

How is colour used? (font; headlines; boxes around titles/words etc ) what is the effect of this?

The colours each have a unique effect on the point that the text is implying. For example, the big capital font around the center of the page implies the most importance. Usually, the most important and biggest message that is being made, also through out the magazine big blue and purple capital letters are used as headings or sub headings in other pages. Generally, the images convey of the colour of  turqious, red and a blend of black and grey. These images are mainly in the text, headline or the perimeter of almost every single page, also purple and dark blue or white is used a lot for the perimeter of the page to fill that space of the page to add sophistication the magazine's final production.

2) Analyzing the front cover of a magazine

Front page elements

Image || What is it of? How is it positioned ? Is it aspiring to the reader? Does it look friendly to invite the reader?

The  front cover of the magazine consists of a main image in the center of Ozzy as the central image, with two small boxes of a man with a dog, and another right next to it with a man eating coco pops. Under that, it shows text of people with names in different colours. Also, at the bottom of the page shows six posters, a big number '6' connotating the number of posters to the audience. Also, the name 'Kerrang' is in big white capital letters  behind the the image of Ozzy. This means that the niche brand is very popular and that the brand name doesn't need to be in front of the picture to be realized.

Title || What connotations does it have ? Why would the reader be attracted to this name?

The fact that the brand's name is behind the main image, it means that the brand name is famous and the people who are involved in the magazine are well known through their producers. The reader would be attracted to this because it is in big white, capital font. Also, the fact that its so broadly known is also engaging to audience since they know that the quality of the magazine will meet their standards.

Subtitles || What are the articles about? Why would the target audience be interested in this?

Unlike the ordinary paragraphs, the subheading is at the top of the page, and the sub title is catchy because it brings out an argument when it says 'VS' in black and by using a rhetorical question, the sub title also shows two images at both ends of the page which is very engaging because it makes the reader feel as if there two sides to the story of the magazine.

Language ||  Is it informal, colloquial ? Is it emotive? Does it grab the reader's attention?

The language is straight forward and formal and it uses a combination of imagery with ellipses. For example, '' At home with...'' ,  and it also uses a bit of informal language by using words such as 'awesome' and 'kick ass''. Secondly, colloquial language when it says ''motionless in white'', giving the audience straight forward information.

Colour || What are the connotations? How many colours are used, what does this say about the reader? What atmosphere does the colour create, why is this attractive to the audience?

The main colours used in the front cover of the magazine are white and yellow, either connotating what Ozzy is presenting or extra information about him or whats inside the magazine. It creates a exciting atmosphere for the reader since the style of the front cover seems so explosive and thrilling. This is attractive to the audience since its a niche brand which meets all the expectations of the audiences who have a strong understanding of the subject of 'Kerrang'.

Price || How does the price reflect the target audience? Think about the category of the audience, how much money would they have to spend on the magazine?

The price of the magazine will definitely effect the audience. If a group of people who are looking to purchase the magazine are of those who are massive fans of KERRANG, than the price will have a smaller negative effect compared to those whom are completely new to the idea of this kind of music magazine. A brand new audience who are starting to a take a interest in KERRANG might not even bother purchasing the magazines if the price is too high. For example, if the magazine was £5-£8 than a massive fan would certainly purchase the magazine. However a person who is new to this particular niche style would most likely not purchase it.

Identify the target audience of the magazine that you have been given

The target audience relates towards the brand identity and the revolutionary world of the media, having a niche target audience, this magazine is aimed for a specific group of men/woman aged about 18-35 since the music is so broadly known by their market consumer.

words such as 'explode' which are colloquial are used to bring a exciting image to the reader and it makes the magazine sounds more positive/friendly and that its targeted for people who want to socialize and have fun, also it grabs the readers' attention because such a creative words illustrates that people can happily express and can feel free to talk about their own thoughts with whats in the magazine.

3) Analyzing the contents page of a magazine

The conventions of the contents page include the information which is imperative for the audience to know what is exactly on what page. Easily to be structured, it should give the reader a clear out lining of what is going to be on what page specifically. Similarly,  the posing of the characters in the big image,  this reinforces the idea that young people are involved, this can also be justified by the images and the red text in the black in a semi circle saying ''Like a sat nav for your eyes'' which reinforces the idea of youth.

Through the contents page, the target audience can be be described as young men and woman aged between 18-35,this can be justified through the imagery and informative text and the editor's letter. Also the colouring and facial expression of the images tells us that calm, young and stylish people are targeted for this kind of magazine.

4) Analyzing the double page spread article of a magazine

The theme/topic of the magazine is music/creative style magazine.
Personal experiences(mostly in double page format)
Personal/public life style. This is shown in the magazine through the long pieces of writing and quotations.

The double page spread consists of one massive image on one page, whilst the article is on the other.

The target audience might find this article attractive because they can personally relate and are going through similar circumstances, the personal issues that Ozzy may be referring to can be understood by his target audience which will engage the audience on a high level. Also, the audience will find this interested because they see him as a goal/idol in life. This may consists of having similar fashion sense or being a mere reflection towards their own peers and family members. Also all the information that the magazine contains and how it intrigues them and how he expresses himself in public figure which is engaging for the target audience. He also keeps them informed and updated on how his music magazines are changing(different editions).

5) Analyzing the Editor's Letter in a Magazine

The editor's letter is a personal response and understanding of the magazine will contain and its their job to reinforce the similar style/genre understanding of what is inside the magazine. The editor's letter may talk in a different style of language to bring in a bigger impact on the point that they're trying to make, for example, using 'informal' or 'colloquial' language. They can also build a informal/formal relationship with their audience who are reading the article and referring to the previous magazine to keep the similar kind of interest strong and alive which is imperative in the niche consuming economy. It is also important that there's a image of the editor's letter to build a positive relationship before they even read the magazine and that they are welcoming their reader; the photo can be judged through age and appearance and other aspects.

KEY CONCEPTS

Representation - How did your research for for this magazine analysis influence your representation?

One way in which my research influenced my planning is through my continues expanding knowledge on magazine productions. I found it extremely interesting knowing exactly how a music magazine research can open your eyes for the world of magazines.

Genre - How did your research for this magazine analysis influence your choice of genre?

One way in which my research for this magazine influenced my choice of genre is through understanding the style of the magazine and the research I did in audiences. Audience circulation and the difference between a niche and broad target audience. This had an overall effect on the over view of my magazine since I based it around rap and embedded a tour idea into my production.

Emotive and colloquial language in magazine

Colloquial - It is the everyday language that is spoken between a group of people

Emotive - Something which causes an emotional reaction

( KERRANG,OCTOBER 11, 2014)

Task 1: Identify the target audience of the magazine that you have been given:

The target audience for this magazine are grown men and woman (mostly men in their 20-30's).
This can be justified through the lay out of the front magazine, this is quite a niche style magazine. It is particularly aimed at people who have a broad understanding of the topic and ideals of the magazine. Secondly, the target audience for the magazine are those who take interest in different experiences such  of concerts and musical tours, also for those who want to travel the world and understand the the world of KERRANG.

Task 2: Pick out colloquial language and emotive words and or phrases that you think are used to attract the target audience

When it says ''earlier this year after 15 months and 81 shows, as the best the band have ever done.'' , by using colloquial language such as ''have ever done'' it really adds to the interest of the subject, everyday language like this is very basic and easily understood by anyone who can reader at a standard level. Also, when it says ''Until those demons make it out of these walls''(page 17 for both quotes). By saying that, its a simple colloquial comparison to another creature and this is a catchy way to grab the reader's attention.

Some emotive language such as, ''either go there every day and have those sobriety meetings, or i'll go there and get pissed!'' makes the reader feel as bad and sympathetic for Ozzy's experiences. Another emotive phrase in the magazine is ''fame has not come without a price'', this again makes the reader feel bad for him since he had to make sacrifices for his success, however it teacher a very important lesson that nothing in life comes easy.

Task 3: Analyse the words you have found and why you think they have been used?

1) words such as 'determined' are a strong way to bring a point across, telling the reader that Ozzy has a sense of pride and self-accomplishment in what he has achieved and it tells the reader that he is willing to do whatever it takes to maintain his position of fame and leave behind a proud legacy. I think this word has been used because the magazine wants the reader to understand that it wasn't easy to achieve what he has and that his career is important. It grabs the reader's attention because it illustrates that Ozzy doesn't give up without a fight.(Page 16)

2) words such as 'hearts-content' have been used been used to signify that the fans also have a special love and affection for how he's made a success of himself and he is a iconic figure of achievement and success, a superior role model to his fans. Secondly, those words have also been used to show that a person's emotions should be realized and that people should be proud and express how they feel to bring out their fullest potential. It creates a emotional thought to the reader since their goal is meant to full fill what they desire. (page 17)

3) Also, words like '' I fell in love'', creates a emotional reaction from the reader because the reader may empathize with how they have fallen in love with their work or experiences and this has effectively been used as a sentence started to show a strong emotional effect and to engage the reader with the same topic. (page 22)

Task 4: Why do magazine used colloquial language?

Magazines target their audience through the use of language. Many magazines aim to attract their audience by using colloquial language. For example, music magazine like Kerrang use words such as 'explode brains' and 'mind sweep', These words are associated with the world of music and concerts with famous singers. Also, young men and woman can be associated with these concerts and musical industries and have a strong sense in idols who are singers, these words have a emotional effect on the reader since it builds excitement and cause butterflies in their stomachs.

analyzing content of a magazine

How do the conventions of the editors letter and how does the editor's letter appeal to the audience?

(MOJO, AUGUST 2014)

One way in which the editor's letter is appealing for the target audience is through explaining the songs that didn't make the ''50 Greatest Led zeppelin songs of all time''.

This is done through how he appeals in a daring way, he talks about the songs that didn't make it, like night flight, using interesting  language, he says '' I challenge you to find someone who listens to that song in its entirety.'' This is appealing to the audience because the editor implies that all songs are interesting and that people should listen, not just to most recent and popular songs but to listen to as many as possible.

Another way in which the conventions of the editor's letter is appealing to the target audience is by starting the sentence with a rhetorical question and its a niche target audience.

Starting a paragraph with a rhetorical question is a strong way to engage your audience, this way a subconscious interest is already being taken. Whilst reading on, you'll begin to accumulate ideas and you'll strongly understand the editor's letter and the point he/he's trying to make if you have knowledge on MOJO. If you have a strong understanding on the matter and of previous magazines then it makes it easier for a specific target audience to be engaged straight away compared to people who are reading these kinds of magazines for the very first time(niche target audience).

A third way in which the editor's letter appeals to the target audience is through the title.

''FEW HAVE DONE MORE IN THE PAST'', this straight away grabs the reader's attention, by making such a strong statement for a title as well, this engages the audience since they would think that the editor has done something incredible compared to other people. This also implies that this editor's has created a unique niche style magazine, the reader can also expect a magazine that transcends the rest through interest and excitement.

Another way in which the conventions of the editor's letter appeals to the audience is through the vinyl era.

''From Johnny Trunk's guide to buying good quality vinyl (page 82) to Nick Saloman's fine selection of rare psych vinyl (page 110) stopping off at the Dead Kennedys' Frankenchrist trail - itself a vinyl-era!'' By this, it emphasis the fact that MOJO vinyl's is going through a new era and that this magazine will be a beginning of a generation of brand new magazines. It also tells us the page numbers, giving the audience outlining of where key bits of information are in the magazine.

Another way in which the editor's letter is appealing to the target audience is through the last sentence, '' Now there's one for the future..''

By this it is trying to imply that they love vinyl so much that if the product itself was cheaper it would have become much more famous and a lot more people would have bought it, it appeals to the niche target audience since the CD that was produced monthly and it couldn't be made this time, it engages the audience since it makes them feel as if they love MOJO itself just as much as their niche audience does.

(Q, NOVEMBER 2013)

One way in which the conventions of the editor's letter appeal to the target audience is about his past and how he interviewed the King of New York Smash hits and challenged him to rap.

This is appealing for the target audience because the editor seemed to have a very interest childhood or past, it gives the idea that this editor had a exciting life and that his magazine style and editing skills was built through experience and personal interests. Also, the fact that he did his own research and had a interview with someone so important also makes the reader think that the magazine contains some important information and some special facts and quotes from such an important person contained in the magazine, and this is very appealing because it makes him seem important.

Another way in which the editor's letter is very appealing by saying how generous the people are who he interviews, including celebrities and sportsmen.

''His generosity, not just in appraising my effort but also in indulging the whole silly idea, illustrates his striking lack of pretension.'', this strongly tells the reader that the important people he's met and interviewed are extremely generous and nice people, it also tells us that these celebrities shouldn't be judged when they are performing and it just makes the reader feel as if they want to read on and find out more about the magazine itself. Thirdly, it also makes the reader feel good about themselves since its talking about such positives things.

A third way in which the conventions of the editor's letter appeals to the audience is through the positive feed back of the real celebrities and sportsmen the editor talks about.

Firstly ,the editor says ''plenty of insufferable egotists populate the lower and middle tiers of celebrity but the men and woman who reach proper superstar status - and stay there - tend to prove genuinely like able and self- aware when you get a rare moment to access them.'' By this it straight away engages the target audience since the editor goes into detail about how much of a rare opportunity it is to get to analyse a bit of how the celebrities are and what they do in their lifestyle and how much of a pleasure it is to meet them.

Another way in which the conventions of the editor's letter is appealing to the audience is by the ending of the letter is self where he said ''If my theory holds, much richer rewards than that are on he way - plus a lot of stupid questions from people like me.''

By that he makes it seem as if he is not cocky about what he is talking about, he is not trying to sounds as if he is better than anyone else and that creates a positive mindset for the reader. Also, it makes it creates a bit of humor between the editor and the reader him/herself and that engages the audience because the editor isn't trying to sound too formal. Thirdly, it creates a good way of communication trying to make a point in a positive way rather then just explaining it in a complex way for only people with a certain level of intellect to understand.

Another way in which the conventions of a editor's letter is appealing to the target audience is through the technological image.

Having a image put up there next to the editor's letter straight is a good thing, this is because it makes a correlation between the reader and the editor's in a positive way,up to a certain point, it also makes the reader feel as if that they can trust the editor and feel comfortable about meeting him, also it makes the reader feel as if the editor is absolutely fine with other people setting up appointments to find out more about how the magazine is made and how the editor feels positive about his experiences.

(KERRANG, OCTOBER 2014)

One way in which the editor's letter is appealing to the target audience is by making the audience feel as if they're involved in whats going on.

By saying ''Editor James is on his hols this week, but before leaving, he set us all a task:'', this makes the audience feel as if they're eligible to take part in any activity and it makes the audience feel as if they are being challenged. Also, it intrigues the audience because it wants the reader to continue reading it if they are interested, it surprisingly draws in the attention of almost every single reader and it allows the more to feel better about themselves since they are able to take part in the whatever the task is.

Another way in which the conventions of the editor's letter intrigues the audience is by saying ''they don't come any more royal than Ozzy Osbourne '',

This makes the reader think that the people that the editor's letter is talking about are the finest people to take part in any activity and its strongly relates to my previous point about how the it makes the reader feel really good when reading this since it involves the best the best people, well the editor strongly reinforces this point, he tries to make himself sound so in control and optimistic and that is very interesting and intrigues the audience.

Another way in which the conventions of the editor's letter intrigues the target audience is by saying ''There was also zero percent jealousy when he returned with amazing stories and a brilliant portrait of a living legend.''

This is engaging because it tells the reader that the editor's experiences are accepted by other people and that he could make something important about that in his own work through his magazine. Also, it is intriguing for the target because it makes it seem as if the editor has amazing experiences and stories and it give the reader the impression that some of the amazement that he has talked about is in the magazine.

A form in which the editor's letter conventions is expressed is when the editor says ''It's a superb read. And that's just for starters...''

By this, it it implies even for those who haven't read it, its absolutely a interesting read even for those who haven't read it and its their first time, it will straight away grab your attention and the magazine itself will be very interesting. Its not niche so it focuses on a broader target audience which is a good thing for young and in experienced people who have absolutely no knowledge on the matter of the magazine.

A fifth way in which the conventions of the editor's letter engages the target audience is through the edited image right above the text.

By having a image on top of the text, it makes the editor's letter seem more interesting and supportive, especially with editor's Jame's thumbs up and by having a smile on his face it makes the reader feel more open and it makes the reader feel as if they could trust the editor more. Secondly, it also makes the reader think that the editor is bringing out a positive point of view from what he's experienced and that intrigues the audience.
