Task 1: Identify the target audience of the magazine that you have been given:
The target audience for this magazine are grown men and woman (mostly men in their 20-30's).
This can be justified through the lay out of the front magazine, this is quite a niche style magazine. It is particularly aimed at people who have a broad understanding of the topic and ideals of the magazine. Secondly, the target audience for the magazine are those who take interest in different experiences such of concerts and musical tours, also for those who want to travel the world and understand the the world of KERRANG.
Task 2: Pick out colloquial language and emotive words and or phrases that you think are used to attract the target audience
When it says ''earlier this year after 15 months and 81 shows, as the best the band have ever done.'' , by using colloquial language such as ''have ever done'' it really adds to the interest of the subject, everyday language like this is very basic and easily understood by anyone who can reader at a standard level. Also, when it says ''Until those demons make it out of these walls''(page 17 for both quotes). By saying that, its a simple colloquial comparison to another creature and this is a catchy way to grab the reader's attention.
Some emotive language such as, ''either go there every day and have those sobriety meetings, or i'll go there and get pissed!'' makes the reader feel as bad and sympathetic for Ozzy's experiences. Another emotive phrase in the magazine is ''fame has not come without a price'', this again makes the reader feel bad for him since he had to make sacrifices for his success, however it teacher a very important lesson that nothing in life comes easy.
Task 3: Analyse the words you have found and why you think they have been used?
1) words such as 'determined' are a strong way to bring a point across, telling the reader that Ozzy has a sense of pride and self-accomplishment in what he has achieved and it tells the reader that he is willing to do whatever it takes to maintain his position of fame and leave behind a proud legacy. I think this word has been used because the magazine wants the reader to understand that it wasn't easy to achieve what he has and that his career is important. It grabs the reader's attention because it illustrates that Ozzy doesn't give up without a fight.(Page 16)
2) words such as 'hearts-content' have been used been used to signify that the fans also have a special love and affection for how he's made a success of himself and he is a iconic figure of achievement and success, a superior role model to his fans. Secondly, those words have also been used to show that a person's emotions should be realized and that people should be proud and express how they feel to bring out their fullest potential. It creates a emotional thought to the reader since their goal is meant to full fill what they desire. (page 17)
3) Also, words like '' I fell in love'', creates a emotional reaction from the reader because the reader may empathize with how they have fallen in love with their work or experiences and this has effectively been used as a sentence started to show a strong emotional effect and to engage the reader with the same topic. (page 22)
Task 4: Why do magazine used colloquial language?
Magazines target their audience through the use of language. Many magazines aim to attract their audience by using colloquial language. For example, music magazine like Kerrang use words such as 'explode brains' and 'mind sweep', These words are associated with the world of music and concerts with famous singers. Also, young men and woman can be associated with these concerts and musical industries and have a strong sense in idols who are singers, these words have a emotional effect on the reader since it builds excitement and cause butterflies in their stomachs.
